Chicago rat removal tip of the month: Rat pest control rats in my roof - Pest control for rats in the roof begins outside. Just because the rats are in the roof does not mean that is the area where they entered the home. Some rats are excellent climbers, and it is likely that a rat in the roof did enter at that level; however, to be certain, you need to comb the exterior of the home and look for any holes that are big enough to let the rats inside. It goes against everything you may think, but you need to seal up the exterior holes before you start to trap the rats. This will mean sealing rats inside of the home. Don't be alarmed. Rats inside will not be immediately panicked that they cannot leave. If anything, the rats inside will look for food in the house to sustain them. Snap traps baited with peanut butter will be extremely effective in this situation. The next step will be to access the space within your roof. You should be able to see areas where the rats have been active. Rat droppings and urine puddles are good examples of areas where rats are active. Unlike people and other mammals, rats will use the same areas to leave droppings again and again. This will scent mark the space for the rat. Areas that have droppings are prime areas to set up traps.
